LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and models available, it can be difficult for the buyer to make a decision between the two technologies. The fact is that LCD projectors give better image quality and colour accuracy. The following article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing a comparable rate of image quality.
Visualise a set of blinds in your house for your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on whether you want to let light in or not. And this is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel operates like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element works to either reflect light or block it.
How the light source is processed from the time the projector is switched on to when the content reaches your screen is ultimately important with regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to create the projector image. Something important to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your projector screen simultaneously. The way a DLP projector operates is very different and even the produced image looks is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to forming an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then draw each coloured element of the image into the total image. Using LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver top brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have added a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this also detracts from colour accuracy.
I read in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be superior. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications in comparison to most LCD projectors. At one glance, this can seem to be an advantage, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is being utilised. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.
When the content you plan to project needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is incontrovertible in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because every colour is projected with the others. DLP manufacturers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the expense of these projectors make them hardly practical for the majority of businesses and consumers.
Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how different colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are not the same and refract light at different levels. Most of the time with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will come up above and an extra blue will come through below an image containing something as simple as a lone black line. During manufacturing LCD projectors can be adjusted to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is projected on separate LCD panels.

A proportional tax is a kind that puts the same relative liability on every taxpayer—i.e., when tax liability and income grow in the same proportion. A progressive tax is characterizable by a more than proportional increase in the tax onus in relation to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional rise in the relative burden. So, progressive taxes are seen as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes might result in an increase these inequalities.
The taxes that are often considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income categories—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to lessen his tax base by claiming deductions or by removing some income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates that are applied to lower-income categories could also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.
Income measured over a given year might not definitely give the best measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory rises in income could be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer may opt to pay for consumption by reducing savings. It is not easy to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of the uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden is dependant for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.
In assessing the economic purpose of taxation, it is important to differentiate between varied ideas of tax rates. The statutory rates are those nominated in legislation; commonly these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. Hence, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates are required to review provisions in addition to the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to understand the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may be reliant on considerations including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.
Average income tax rates display the percentage of total income that is demanded in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates usually increase with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households may swamp these effects, producing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that lower as income increases.
